This means small things matter a lot. Like when an architect designs a building, paying attention to every little detail can make a big difference in the final result.
- Scrum and Agile focus on speed
Today, many teams use methods like Scrum and Agile to create software quickly and deliver it fast to customers. It’s like running a fast factory that makes cars — only here, the “factory” is a team of people building software.
Example: Imagine a factory that makes toy cars. The factory wants to make many toys quickly, so it follows a strict process. Similarly, software teams use Scrum to plan and build features fast.
- Software is made by people, not machines
Unlike a real factory where machines build things automatically, software is created by developers who think, feel, and solve problems. They work from lists of tasks called “backlogs” or “user stories.” - Building maintainable machines (good code) matters
Long ago, some engineers said it’s important to make machines (and software) that are easy to fix and improve over time. Good code is easy to read and understand, not just something that works. - Example: Think of a messy room vs. a tidy room. A tidy room is easier to find things in and clean up later. Good code is like a tidy room — easy to work with and fix.

A famous expert said we should clean up and rewrite software every 7 years because, over time, the code gets messy (“cruft”). But today, since things change fast, maybe we should clean code more often, like daily or weekly. - Attention to detail is often ignored
Many times, developers stop working on code before it’s really finished, focusing more on how it looks (like a pretty design) than on making it solid and high quality. - Small details hurt in the long run
Ignoring little problems in code causes bigger issues later, like a bad penny that always comes back. - Businesses and schools often don’t care about clean code
Unfortunately, companies and universities often don’t teach or encourage keeping code neat and tidy, even though it’s very important.

We will never eliminate necessary precision, so there will always be a need for code.
Some people think that in the future, we won’t need to write code because machines will understand what we want just by hearing our ideas. But Uncle Bob disagrees. He says that even the best systems need clear and detailed instructions, and that’s exactly what code is. Even if programming languages become easier or closer to human language, we will still need code to describe what the computer should do, because only code can be precise enough for machines to understand and execute.

In the end, no matter how powerful generative AI becomes, software will always demand a level of precision and craftsmanship that cannot be waved away by vague ideas or automated shortcuts. The “devil” truly is in the details — in the small decisions, the tidy structures, and the careful refinements that turn concepts into robust, maintainable systems. Agile methods may accelerate delivery, but speed without attention to detail only magnifies long-term problems. Code, at its core, is the language of precision, and as long as we build software for machines to execute and humans to maintain, there will be no substitute for writing it with care. The future may bring new tools and faster ways to build, but the responsibility to get the details right will always remain.
